Acquired Savant Syndrome, sudden and congenital savant syndrome are instances in which dormant savant skills emerge, sometimes at a prodigious level, after a brain, spinal injury or disease in previously non-disabled (neurotypical) persons where few such skills were evident before such injury or disease often called “accidental genius”.
Savant skills generally narrow to five general categories: Art, Music, Mathematics and Spatial Skills.
We are an international guild of Acquired Savant Syndrome, Sudden or Congenital artists in the visual and performing arts with the desire to work as a group with shared interests and standards.
Everything we create, champions the message that out of any type of physical or mental trauma, creativity is in every one of us and it can emerge if you open your heart, mind and soul.
The artworld has two types of artist category; the trained and the outside artist.
The guild's mission is to provide a platform where Acquired Savant Syndrome Artists can showcase work, create awareness and introduce the artworld to the third very talented artist category.
Join ASG as an artist, patron, gallery, curator, critic or simply as a friend.
Welcome.
An unexpected thing happened as I was jogging into the ocean in May 2018: the sand gave way under my foot, and I tripped and broke my neck.
Today, I am a tetraplegic that miraculously awoke from surgery with the ability to paint, the beneficiary of Acquired Savant Syndrome.
I know it could all have been worse.
As a result, I seek to create vibrant, visual adventures that hopefully bring a little joy into people's’ lives and enable them to keep life’s difficulties at bay, even for just a moment.
Painting is my passion and my life.
My art career was the result of
a boat accident in 2015 where I broke my back and injured both wrists.
A week after the accident, I began to have dreams in vivid color with hands moving paint in a frenetic manner.
Eventually, I discovered these hands were artists Larry Poons and Gerhard Richter.
Prior to this accident, I never painted, experiencing what was diagnosed as "Acquired Savant Syndrome” .
Becoming an “accidental artist” was perhaps the best thing that could have ever happened to me from a traumatic event.
Where we are and what we are doing.

Our mentor and friend, Darold A. Treffert passed on December 14, 2020.
Dr. Treffert spoke and wrote extensively on several mental health topics and advocated tirelessly for the rights of the mentally ill.
He became an internationally-known researcher in the areas of Acquired Savant Syndrome, autism, and hyperlexia.
His interest was genuine, his enthusiasm often life-changing as Alder and I can attest..
He took particular pride in inspiring a generation of "fresh, new explorers" in the area of neuroscience.
Dr. Treffert leaves behind a wonderful legacy through Agnesian HealthCare's Treffert Center, established in 2016, which invites individuals, families and communities globally to explore the potential of the human mind, focusing on strengths rather than limitations.
He firmly believed in finding and nurturing the "islands of intactness" in everyone.
Dr. Rafal is Medical Director of the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island and former Chief of Rehabilitation and Restorative Care.
His passion is to bring the best that science has to offer while acknowledging that true healing must embrace the art of medicine and the humanity in each of us.
